-----» When we read, most of us are simply searching for meaning. Very few of us ever take the time to reflect on the actual words as they are printed on the page. This issue, NJ talks to a man whose passion is the typed word – not so much for what they are trying to convey but more for what they look like. Anuthin Wongsunkakon is a typographic designer whose skill helps to make the written word so much more appealing.

Anuthin graduated with a Master’s Degree in Design from Pratt Institute School of Art & Design in New York. He is one of the founding partners of Behaviour Group Inc. & Cadson Demak Co.,Ltd., a Thai design studio that offers full typographic services.

His company is certainly attracting attention; his fonts have been used in magazines, book covers, consumer packaging and record sleeves. His corporate work has included projects for Thai clients such as AIS, Dtac, CAT Telecom and Wallpaper Magazine’s Thai edition.

Anuthin believes that fonts define who we are but is well aware that sometimes we are so used to communicating through fonts that we take them for granted. He believes that fonts have power. Some types, when combined into words, can help the reader feel beyond the meaning of the words. In terms of design, he claims endless inspiration. Typographic design is very challenging in that the design needs to maintain its original shape. For instance, after redesigned, the font still needs to be readable.

Anuthin believes that before becoming a typographic designer you need to start from the basics of graphic design. When you understand the whole idea of graphic design, you will find out whether you have passion for this career or not. As a typographic designer you need to commit to your work 24/7. Moreover, you also need to be good at Maths and English as well. So, anyone who pursues this career needs to be very open-minded and driven.
